That Obscure Object of Desire

"Who of you", Son asked  in a wondering voice, "reads 'Men's Health'?"
Coming back from their Honeymoon in the USA he had found a forgotten magazine in their flat in Munich.
"Me", I confessed.
A few days before Husband had associated me to the minority of 8% women who do just that: read the magazine with a male target-group.
And now I added That Touch of Pink to a crowd of males - a dark mass of fascinated men, staring with glittering eyes and only one hot desire in their - um, well, their eyes were glued to the
Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport L'Or Blanc.

I admit: I do love cars!
And this Bugatti is a dream car: uniquely high performance of 1,200 hp, a maximum torque of 1,500 Nm and a world-record top speed of 431,072 km/h.
If you still marvel whether you should use your "good" porcelain every day, innovative minds have already gone one step further: Die Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin has designed "the quickest porcelain of the world" and put 12 elements into this Beauty (e.g. the centre console and the petrol cap).

"Bugatti: Art & Perfection" is an exhibition in the Automobil Forum Unter den Linden.
Bugatti was founded 1909 in Molsheim, France, by Italian-borne Ettore Bugatti. (His father Carlo was an architect, silverware designer and furniture maker; his brother Rembrandt a sculptor; his son Jean an automotive designer).
"Bugatt is an ultra-luxury high performance automobile brand" -
The Brescia Type 13 was the first serious race victory for Bugatti at Le Mans in 1920 (it pioneered the 'powered-to-weight ratio'; the legendary Type 35 was the most successful racing car ever created, winning over 2,000 races -'the only automobile of its age that could be driven both on the road and on the racetrack'; the Type 41 Royale "The best luxury car in the world, a car for kings and royalty'

Sadly only three of them were ever sold.
Oh, Ladies - I see you stiffle a yawn - your eyes glaze over...
Maybe this will wake you up:
If you win the lottery you might buy a Type 57 SC Atlantic - "the most valuable automobile in the world. An Atlantic sold in 2010 for more than 30 million dollars."

Let's speed up!

Dear Britta,
I'm not a big fan of cars but the Bugatti in your pictures is simply divine! You are right ... maybe if I'll won the lottery I can buy one ... but as I'm a woman, if I'll won the lottery I'll never spent money on cars ... I prefer others :)
Bisou, Babi

My dear Britta, I can honestly say that I do not know how to respond to this post! :)

I am not a big car fan but these look like works of art so I appreciate their design. Very sleek and shiny and they must be fun to ride in!

Like the above comments, I am not a car nut. I have a VW Golf that gets me where I need to go and that's enough for me. I used to subscribe to Mens Health but after a couple of years cancelled it, there are only so many abs workouts I can read.

I would love a Bugatti Veyron!!! I'm a bit of a car fan myself even though my own car of choice (which I love) is a 19 year old Land Rover 110 Defender TDI....but I love that because it's makes it very hard for people to pigeon hole me! :D
I've got a bit of a thing about the Mazda RX8 at the moment :P

Dear Babi,
I understand that: it must be a very big win in the lottery - and even then there would exist a lot of valuable other things to spend the money on :-)
Dear Suze,
I guess it is not often that we see you speechless :-) (Sorry to be the cause - people have so many facets - and it always comes as a surprise)
Dear Hostess,
that's the feeling I had too - though they didn't let us touch, let alone ride. But I enjoy beautiful design - and dreams.
Dear Tony,
I'm not a subscriber of Men's Health - but I enjoy it as a counterpart to women magazines, which are so predictable. But, as you remarked: abs workout are predictable, too :-)
Dear Nutty Gnome,
you must be a sister of the 8% who share my compassion for beautiful cars! I had so many cars in my life - never a new one, and some very quite speedy, then I changed to Volvo when our son came :-) When I was young I applied to a contest by Cosmopolitan - they offered the attendance at a race through an African desert - and I was so disappointed when I was not drawn by lot. Nowadays I own a car, but seldom use it - in Berlin you can do everything by tube& tram (at this confession, Suze finds her tongue again?) But I still dream of an cool old Jag XJ6 - and I am one who works to fulfill her dreams, even if they may appear silly. As to a Bugatti: even dreams have limits)

Britta, I can well understand why you like this car. It's QUITE the fashion statement! (And the Buñuel reference is spot-on!)

We can be witty and pretty AND car girls! Zoomzoom.

I feel elegant just rolling the word Bugatti around on my tongue! Wasn't it the wheel of a Bugatti that caught the end of Isadora Duncan's scarf?

Britta said...

Dear Susan,
as always you hit the nail on the head - luxury always has an obscure side, too, as desire.
Dear Crayon,
I had to look up "zoom zoom" (thinking that you were not speaking of Mazda) and learned that it is the same sound that our children, playing with matchbox cars, make - we write "brumm, brumm".
Dear Pondside - that is a wonderful idea: to savour a word like a good wine or choc! Poor Isadora - her silk scarf, her young lover (the mechanic of the Bugatti Type 35) - too much luxury seems to be dangerous :-)

Hello Britta,

you have an interesting tale to tell about cars. Thanks for sharing these details and the pictures..and about the lottery :)

Britta said...

Dear Tomz,
thank you! I loved that porcelain patrol cap: they show a white elephant on it - the brand mark of Bugatti.
