A Hat or not A Hat - That is the Question!
In her new post, Pondside asks whether she should wear a hat or not.
I am a fan of hats - and wear them often.
This photograph is not that convincing - but the hat is fine:
I like them in winter, too (well, this is a mixture between cap and hat):
Of course one has to stay polite: at the cinema or theatre the person behind you still should be able to follow the action :-)
The following hat I bought in Munich, it was made by a very famous milliner, but I have to confess that I didn't wear it that often (Son told me: "If you drive a Pontiac Trans AM like me, you don't have to spray it pink to get attention." Well, he has a very convincing way to persuade me. Though I liked the hat... )
This one is for "Gardening in High Heels".
And this one only for fun ( a picture from Hamburg, two years ago).
A hat is a fine way to change your appearance, and not so drastic as a new hair-colour (NO - I didn't - it's only a funny wig).
If I find a very daring hat and nobody wants to accompany me, I still have this cute 'family man":
so utterly smart!

With hat, definitely. A hat is part of the human condition.
People who shun hats are fools. Nature has spent millions of years evolving us from slime so that we have a head that is exactly the right shape to go into the holes in hats.
Dear Britta,
As I know, hats are very popular and common in the European countries..In our country, caps are worn as part of Uniforms like the one put on by policemen and military people..Thanks for sharing your pix in many poses wearing different types of hats
Dear IG,
thank you for that utterly convincing argument on evolution! Male birds often wear so nice feathers too, and hats convince me on a male head too (preferably Borsalino, I like large brims).
When we lived in Germany I had a couple lovely hats... felt, formed and quite chic (for the time). I have garden hats, but seldom wear them. As for warm winter hats, I live in South Carolina --- the occasion doesn't come too often.
I do believe a good garden hat is a must when it gets down to the basic question.
Looks like a fun hat post britta!
You wear hats very well and I love the wide brimmed one.
My dear Britta -- what a fun post! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing your lovely self model. I like the hat for Gardening in High Heels best, I think. And what your son said about the Trans Am makes very good sense -- though I think there is most certainly a place for pink.
Dear Janet,
thank you - no need to wear a warm winter hat can make one almost jealous (because the 'coiffure' doesn't look very great after a long walk with a warm hat).
Dear Hostess,
thank you - I love that too (though I need a lot of place with it :-), and as I am 1.78m tall it works. But only on a special occasion - even for the winter hat I have to be in a very confident mood if I travel by underground.
Dear Suze,
thank you! I love pink - but that might have been a bit too much (though: not really...sniff), - had I taken it in white I could still wear it. It is as with very short skirts: the seller says to me: "But you can wear it" - and I say: "Thank you - but I don't have to :-)
Dear Tom,
thank you! Here our policemen have changed their uniforms (from unbecoming green&beige to dark blue) - and their 'hats' look very American style - like the singers from the Village People with "Y.M.C.A." :-)
You clearly ARE a hat girl! You have such a delightful collection! Hats and I-we're not close.
I've just discovered the new possibility of placing answers directly under a comment - great! See: I haven't deleted anything above, I just copied my note to Tomz and placed it directly under his comment, unchanged.
Dear Crayon,
thank you! I can understand that one finds hats not functional - and I am not trying to make proselytes, because the most important thing is to feel 'bien dans sa peau`.
I've never been able to carry off a hat, so it's all the more enjoyable to see these wonderful photos in which you do. I remember that first photo--all elegance and charm.
Dear Susan,
thank you! In the first photograph it is not only my hat that is shining but my happiness, because it was the day that our Son and Daughter-in-law married.
I often think: it is the attitude, the conviction that something is becoming which is most important - then one can even wear a pancake on the head and (almost) look good (but don't spray it pink :-)
Ooooohh gorgeous! I wear hats only in summer. All of your hats are beautiful and you look really great with them.
As I've already mentioned, I love the first photo so much in which you are really lovely!
Dear Sapphire,
thank you! In summer hats are wonderful to give a bit of shade - in Europe I only see Japanese women who are so sensible to use a sun-umbrella against too much sun. I love the first photo too, because it was such a happy day.
PS: Do you know the Sondheim song, The Ladies Who Lunch? Check the last part of the first stanza(made immortal by Elaine Stritch, who does still wear hats):
Here's to the ladies who lunch--
Everybody laugh.
Lounging in their caftans
And planning a brunch
On their own behalf.
Off to the gym,
Then to a fitting,
Claiming they're fat.
And looking grim,
'Cause they've been sitting
Choosing a hat.
Does anyone still wear a hat?
I'll drink to that.
Oh Susan,
I didn't know that - it's very funny! I see it vividly before my eyes, and think of the quote by a German writer, Susanna Kubelka, who in High Times of Feminism fought for men, speaking of idle women who let only their husband work as "little fur bearing animals sitting on a sofa eating cake".
But I have to interrupt our little chat: I have to hurry to the gym! :-)
Hats always look classy. When I was a kid I used to dream about big hats women wear from the movies. But when I became a teenager, I ended up collecting not hats but many baseball caps :) Your hats are beautiful and you look beautiful in them.
Dear Psychelin,
thank you! Baseball caps are fine at a beach or anywhere with a lot of wind - but hats are more fun!
