Change?

Nothing in the world is permanent, and we're foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we're still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.
W.Somerset Maugham

Yesterday I tried something new in 'my' Blogland - some of you may have noticed it: I changed my template to the new Dynamic Version - Mosaic - as I have already done in "Gardening in Highheels" and "Britta's Happiness of the Day."
I loved the result. So non-committing. So optional. So "new".
See: I love change.
Then I tried to write a new post - this one - on my other computer, a  Mac - where I have all my "old" photographs from Hamburg, like the one above.
But I could not get at my homepage there, so I changed the template back.
Now my question to you:

Which template do you like more?

(To see the new one you have to look at www.burstingwithhappiness.blogspot.com to compare).

And another question:

How do you notice when I have written a new post?

I take all of your blogs on my blog list - one glance at the left side of my template and I see who has written something new. But those who chose to show only a selection of blogs on their bloglist: how do you notice a new post of mine? You write comments, so there must be a way.

Please tell me - and if you prefer the new version, I'll find a way to change it.

Hello Britta:
To be honest with you, Britta, and having toyed with the new lay-out ourselves, we found it far too confusing and much prefer this one. It is interesting that of all the blogs we follow, only one has gone over to the new version.

How do we know when a new post has come in? We rely very heavily on our reader [reading list in our Dashboard] and scroll down to the point, which we always note, where we left off.

Dear Jane and Lance,
thank you! Your remark about the layouts of the blogs you follow is very interesting: same here! My reading list is a bit overcrowded, I have to work on that.

I follow your blog. When you post something it shows up immediately on my dashboard. I'm not fond of the mosaic as I find it too busy, when all I really want to do is read what you have to say.

Dear Pondside,
I know by your many comments, that I appreciate very much, that you follow :-) I see the point with reading versus pictures - and I think it is the variety of blogs that appear on my dashboard that I find confusing (can't find the button to eliminate one I don't want to follow any longer)

Dear Britta,
I totally agree with Jane, I prefer the old one. This new is really a little bit confusing! The mosaic is really too big!
I have to study better the new blog I don't see post.
Have a wonderful week end.
Bisous, Babi

Hi Britta,
Yes, change is good, but not too much! ;) You have changed your name as well! ;)

I have trouble sometimes negotiating the mosaic, particularly when I go to write a comment. Ease of use is all for that! I've tried many methods for keeping track of blogs I want to follow, and I found what works best is to have the lists, like you do, right on the site. Then, of course, the lists get too big! I don't have a good answer, but that's why, currently, I have three sections of lists and also why I don't use icons or show more than the title. That way, I (usually) am able to spot pretty quickly who has a new post (so long as the person posting uses titles, that is, and almost all do).

Dear Babi,
thank you! It is all a bit confusing. When you click on the picture in Mosaic, the text will appear. I wish you a beautiful weekend, too! Bisous, Britta

Dear John,
only when I read your comment it I saw it: the change in name appeared when I linked my blogg to Google+ (though I am not very often on that side - too stressful to divide people into 'friends', acquaintances' and 'circles'. Now I don't know how to get my old profile back - change means work, I see - but all people call me Britta!

Dear Sue,
as I know by experience you are a master in steering through the mosaic! I see now that everybody opts for the 'old school' - and that convinces me, too (on Happiness with the many photos I will keep Mosaic, and on 'Gardening' I forgot to make a copy to return too).
One thing that is enjoyable: I found out how to stop that unnerving comment-hieroglyphs - or so I hope very much!
But I lost the reply-function.
I will keep the blog-list as you do, more easy at a glance for me.

On my dashboard I have 'All blogs' selected on my Reading List, it's a lot to look through.

Ha! As for being a master (of anything, but certainly the mosaic), I can only echo Francis Urquhart (House of Cards, a BBC series from a few years ago): "You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."

Britta said...

Dear Tony,
that's what I think: a lot to look through. But what do you do if ypu won't follow a blog no longer? There exists somewhere a button - but I can't find it.

Britta said...

Dear Sue,
I really meant it! And will make a mental note of the quote - like it. And maybe youtube - they lost a law suit with Gema recently - will show me a snippet of 'House of Cards'.

It is difficult to keep up with all of the blogs I "follow." I've lost count of them! I do keep a blog list like you do, which is instantly updated when someone adds a post. The blog list changes periodically, usually based on the frequency of comments I get from those bloggers on the list. Thanks for being one of my frequent visitors! I have resisted changing my template for a while now, but I know I probably need to do something with it eventually. *Sigh* So many changes this year, already.

I tried the newer version for a little while too - it looked nice on the screen, but the more I used it the less personal it became. All of a sudden, it looked like a splashy magazine with paid editors who care very little for what I, as a reader, and possibly someone who would like to submit a thought to their world - Wants! It became very impersonal. I prefer this version.

As to how I know when you post - your posts are along the side of my blog, like you have here, and I scroll through the ones I've chosen to follow to see what's up with everyone! I love this photo, by the way!

Dear Walk2Write,
I lost count too - and as you might have seen in my remarks above, I don't know how to get rid of those that I don't want to follow any more. I love your blogs, so I like to comment. And yes: changes you had a lot in the last year - now must come a season of happy peace!

Britta said...

Dear Liesl,
that is a point, the blog becoming impersonal - it is more solitary, too. I always wonder (at Britta's Happiness of the Day) why the stats and page views are sky-rocketing high, though I have only one, very dear, follower. Maybe a lot of people want an espresso, not a lungo :-)
Sorry that only today I discovered that you were not on my blog-list, I mended that! And thank you for liking the photo: I did it in Hamburg - it was luck of the moment.
